Machinist Apprentice
The incumbent of this role is responsible for assisting in the set up and operation of various CNC machines to perform operations such as turning, milling, drilling, tapping, grinding, spot facing, etc., to critical tolerances using the necessary tools. In this role, the Apprentice Machinist is responsible for verifying the accuracy of the manufactured component against the blueprint or engineering drawings by measuring dimensions using precision measuring equipment.
Key Duties and Responsibilities
- Take instruction from the Lead hand and/or Trainer in the department in which he/she is training;
- With guidance from the assigned Trainer, read the blueprints and job instruction sheets to determine proper set up procedure, machining sequence, and dimensions of finished component;
- With guidance from the assigned Trainer, perform set up and operation of conventional, special-purpose, and numerical control (NC) machines and machining centers to fabricate metallic parts, and fit and assemble machined parts into complete units;
- Observe numerical displays on control panel and compare with data on process sheet to verify dimensional adjustments, feed rates and speeds or machining cuts;
- With assistance, edit program to optimise and/or correct machine performance;
- With assistance, ensure effective production of quality parts by checking these parts to the blueprint or sketches, using gauges and measuring equipment.
Skills and Qualifications
- Completion of secondary school or equivalent.
- Completion of a Pre-Apprenticeship training course would be an asset.
- High level of detail accuracy, manual dexterity, and hand-eye co-ordination;
- Proficient at Reading text, Document use, Numeracy;
- Good Written and Oral communication, Problem solving, Decision making, Critical thinking, Job task planning and organizing, Significant use of memory;
- Ability to work as a team/independent;
- Ability to seek clarification on unclear drawings or job instructions and to seek help when problems arise.
- Ability to work in a safe and orderly manner.
- Ability to effectively communicate in both oral and written.
Upon successful completion of on-the-job training, minimum worked hours and academic requirements the incumbents are required to write the Ministry of Education and Training skill test to achieve a certificate of General Machinist.
