The Vision
El Sistema Aeolian is a program run by The Aeolian Hall, a centre for research and development of arts programs with focus on social justice, social inclusion, and community development.
 
El Sistema Aeolian provides free access to an intensive, quality music education program to London children and youth. The goals of the program are to remove barriers to participation while offering orchestral, choral, and instrumental experiences to youth, developing skills and helping them achieve their full potential. It is inspired by the El Sistema social development movement founded in Venezuela in 1975 that has been adopted by and awarded in many other countries around the world.
 
The Teaching Position
This is an opportunity for musicians who share a vision of social inclusion and have a commitment to being part of a social justice movement that believes in empowering youth through the experience of ensemble music-making.
 
This position is suited for energetic individuals that thrive in fast-paced environments and have a passion for giving every child the best possible education opportunities and who have the ability to engage and motivate children throughout the day-to-day lessons and rehearsals.
 
Teaching team members are responsible for delivering the program’s strategic vision by teaching and guiding children Grades One through Ten in orchestra and sectionals as well as individual lessons.
The program takes place September through June, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday,
Time frame: 4:00 -6:30pm. Some evening and weekend hours around performances and workshops are required. Teachers must be available during normal operating hours of the El Sistema Aeolian program.
Empoyment status: Contract; hourly.
 
Teaching team members work closely with and report to Program Coordinator and Executive Director.
A three-month probationary period applies to it. Performance appraisals will be scheduled at times as deemed appropriate and necessary.
 
This position is accountable for:
  • Teaching sectional/individual lessons as scheduled, teaching cello and/or double bass.
  • Conduct sectional rehearsals, working with beginner to intermediate level children Grade One to Grade Ten weekly during the school year.
  • Play instrument during ESA’s public performances
  • Adapt and create pieces/parts to all ability levels, as needed in the classroom
  • Attendance at staff meetings and professional development opportunities
  • Responsible for basic upkeep of program’s musical instruments.
  • To assist with other duties as may be assigned by the Executive Director and/or Program Coordinator, including:
    • Logistical support during regular sessions, special workshops, and public performances (set up/tear down, instrument transportation/volunteer coordination)
    • Interact with participant youth during snack/meal times contributing to a caring environment
    • Provide Program Coordinators with feedback regarding individual children issues that may arise
    • Implement measures to control risks and solve issues around participant youth
    • Other tasks and special projects as may be assigned by the Executive Director and/or Program Coordinators
Requirements
  • Eager to become part of and to support the El Sistema Aeolian program’s vision and growth. We are looking for passionate advocates of our program
  • Bachelor of Music or equivalent
  • Demonstrated experience in teaching and motivating children and youth in both, private and class environment.
  • Must be available during normal operating hours of the El Sistema Aeolian program.
  • Highly motivated, with experience working independently as well as in a collaborative environment
  • Teachers must adhere to standard and program specific policies, including Police Vulnerable Sector Check
  • Dependable, with excellent interpersonal and customer service skills
  • Passion and commitment for music education as an instrument for social justice
