Purpose and Role of Position:
Maintain a safe and clean atmosphere for residents/tenants/staff/volunteers by preventing damage, cleaning, and conducting repairs at Anova's sites and by complying with Health and Safety Standards.
Job Summary:
Work with the support team to provide a safe and clean atmosphere at all Anova sits. Provide general building maintenance as needed, working with the full-time Maintenance Worker. Occasional interaction with contractors and other third-party service providers, working to provide repairs at our locations. Maintain accurate custodial and maintenance records.

Job Qualifications:
  • Health & Safety Standards and Equipment & Techniques Training
  • Workplace Hazardous Material Information System (WHMIS) Certification
  • Technical diploma specializing in custodian work
  • Experience in general building maintenance, i.e. electricity, machinery, and/or carpentry
  • Knowledge of Building Code Regulations
  • Class G driver's license

Job Responsibilities Including But Not Limited To:
Responsibility: Custodial
  • Follow cleaning/maintenance schedules as set out for each site
  • Operate and care of the cleaning equipment as set out in the manufacturer's instructions
  • Maintain accurate recording of information related to custodial responsibilities on appropriate forms and keep up to date (Planned Preventative Maintenance)
  • Maintain an inventory of bulk storage/linens and order as necessary
Responsibility: Maintenance and Repairs
  • Follow preventative maintenance schedules as set out
  • Painting and general maintenance of shelters and Second Stage Housing (SSH)
  • Operate and care for equipment as per manufacturer's instructions
  • Assess maintenance problems and use service agreements when necessary
  • Maintain accurate recording of all information related to maintenance and repairs on appropriate forms and keep files up to date (PPM)
  • Conduct maintenance inspections of apartments and shelters as per schedules
  • Maintaining inventory of maintenance needs and order as necessary
  • Assist in problem solving issues related to the heating/cooling/ air equipment, plumbing, electrical, security, exterior systems of all 3 sites
  • Follow policy for donated electrical items
  • Consult with full-time maintenance worker to problem solve issues
  • Periodic participation in the Maintenance On-Call rotation
Responsibility: Safety
  • Follow through with responsibilities in accordance with Anova's safety, fire, and
  • operational procedures
  • Use proper safety equipment and clothing as per policy
  • Ensure proper use of commercial cleaning products and equipment
  • Ensure all products used are appropriately labeled and contain the information as required by legislation
  • Identify maintenance difficulties and repair/record for maintenance worker or follow-up with appropriate service personnel
  • Conduct weekly 'Healthy and Safe' room checks
  • Sit as a member of Health and Safety Committee, rotating periodically with other Maintenance/Custodial Staff
Responsibility: Resident/Tenant Support
  • Maintain strict confidentiality of client information
  • Instruct residents/tenants on the appropriate use of products when requested
  • Provide 24-hour maintenance emergency to SSH as required for coverage
  • Ensure all residential areas are stocked with the necessary paper and personal hygiene supplies
  • Assist with the moving and sorting of donations as necessary
Responsibility: Other Duties
  • Model Respect at Work principles and skills while carrying out daily activities as well as helping others practice them internally and with the individuals they serve
  • Participate in orientation/training of new staff, students, and volunteers
  • Attend regular staff meetings, team meetings and training sessions as appropriate and/or required.
  • Participate on agency committees as appropriate and/or required.
  • Follow Anova policies and procedures as documented and required.
  • Maintain a current awareness of gender-based violence, issues related to women and current data specific to Anova.
  • Deal effectively with job related stress including assessing personal need for time off and/or professional development.

  • Supervision of summer grant students
  • Set up rooms for community and staff meetings
  • Occasional pick-up and sorting of community donations
  • Participate in the evaluation of service as required
  • Transporting of items among Anova sites through driving the agency van
  • Other duties as assigned
