Job Description

Thames Valley Children's Centre (TVCC) is the regional rehabilitation Centre serving children and youth with physical disabilities, communication, and developmental needs in 10 counties of Southwestern Ontario. We are a community-oriented Centre providing assessment, diagnosis, consultation and therapy. We serve more than 8,000 children, ranging from newborn to young adults, every year. Our research, creativity and innovations have made us pioneers in the treatment and management of disabilities and special needs.

We are seeking two temporary, full-time (37.5 hours per week) Social Workers in Family and Community Services. These are new positions created to support families registered with Autism Services who will be transitioning into the new Ontario Autism Program.

The successful candidates may work out of any TVCC regional office location. Regular driving throughout southwestern Ontario will be required. The successful candidates will be expected to work occasional evenings. These positions are expected to begin in January 2017 and end in March 2018.

Responsibilities:
The successful candidate will:
•    Assess and provide psychosocial support and guidance to families, children and youth within a holistic and comprehensive framework using a variety of methods including face-to-face meetings, telephone, brief counselling and cyber-counselling
•    Assume the role of primary point of contact for families for information and guidance about the transition to the new Ontario Autism Program
•    Assist families to identify, plan and coordinate services for their child
•    Connect families to supports and services in their communities and help them navigate service systems
•    Educate and support families to enhance abilities to advocate positively within school and community environments
•    Build relationships within the community to develop a foundation for success for clients and their families.
•    Help the family with practical considerations such as identifying financial supports, completing paperwork, solving issues such as transportation, or finding informal supports in their community

Qualifications:
•    Master’s Degree in Social Work
•    Current registration (or eligible for registration) with the Ontario College of Social Workers and Social Service Workers
•    A comprehensive knowledge of service requirements for families with a child with Autism Spectrum Disorder
•    Preference will be given to a candidate with experience or knowledge of Autism Services
•    Previous clinical experience and skill with assessment, family system analysis, strengths-based interventions and individual brief counselling
•    Knowledge of children’s services including rehabilitation, mental health, child care and education
•    Strengths in interpersonal relations, communication, and problem solving, with the ability to support a multidisciplinary team in stressful family and community work environments.
•    Strong clinical telephone skills and have a deep belief in the positive impact that telephone exploration and intervention can have with families.
•    Current knowledge of best practices and literature related to disability, family and community development and the Life Needs Model.
•    Computer proficiency including MS Office 2010 package of software
•    Valid Ontario driver’s licence and access to a vehicle
