Cargill is a large and reputable food company with operations around the world.  Cargill Value Added Meats - Food Service operates a chicken processing plant in London, Ontario and a hatchery in Jarvis, Ontario.  The processing plant employs approximately 900 employees and processes 85,000 chickens each day.  The hatchery has approximately 70 employees and, on average, produces 150,000 chicks per day.  Cargill Value Added Meats - FS operates ground beef processing facilities in Brampton, Ontario and Spruce Grove, Alberta and employs approximately 130 employees. 
 
Reporting to the Regional EHS Manager, as the Safety Manager, you will provide safety compliance, risk management and project management leadership to the London, ON, Spruce Grove, AB and Jarvis, ON facilities within the CVAM-FS Business Unit.  You will respond to the daily operational needs to ensure effective and proactive Behaviour Based Safety (BBS) programs are in place to enable a zero incident record.  Additionally, you will be responsible to evaluate significant business risks and develop critical task procedures, conduct pre-start health and safety reviews as well as conduct EHS audits for compliance with Corporate and regulatory requirements.   In this position, you will be responsible for leading and managing a team consisting of a Safety Coordinator, and a part time Health and Safety Administrator.
 
Principal Accountabilities:
 
30% Safety Leadership:  Develop, implement, and drive health and safety programs in order to achieve and maintain the Business Unit (BU) goal of zero safety incidents; conduct regular health and safety performance reviews, assessments and follow-up to ensure that locations are in compliance with BU, Corporate and regulatory requirements; actively participate with Corporate EHS activities and industry/professional organization health and safety initiatives; proactively work with leadership at Plant and Corporate levels and consistently contribute to raising the bar on safety; develop positive high trust relationships with production employees and supervisors; champion proactive relationships with Government Agencies.   
 
25% Continuous Improvement:  Coordinate and monitor behavioural based safety systems, industrial hygiene, ergonomic programs, risk assessments, fire safety & security and incident investigations and discover and implement corrective actions to prevent personal injury and property loss; provide new ideas and methods to improve safety processes; lead the OHSAS 18001 program; develop positive success stories from all levels of the plant.  
 
25% Communication:  Communicate effectively with site leadership and stakeholders in the development and implementation of site specific safety programs; champion stakeholder engagement and Co-Chair the Joint Health and Safety Committee Systems; lead the efforts of creating a culture of accountability; conduct weekly meetings with safety staff to review and establish action registers.

Reporting and Measuring:  Produce regular summary reports and analysis on health and safety activities, performance measurement and results; plan, prepare and present monthly health and safety reports; utilize action registers to ensure department has clear up and down communication.
Qualifications
 
Required:
  • Post secondary degree or diploma, preferably in a related field (Safety, Ergonomics, Engineering, Occupational Medicine, etc.)
  • 5-8 years progressive related experience in health and safety field
  • 1 or more  years of supervisory experience
  • Experience in a manufacturing environment 
  • Ability to lead, influence others, foster teamwork, and collaborate
  • Strong decision making, communication and presentation skills
  • Creative problem solving skills
  • Effective time management and organizational skills
  • Knowledge of OHSA and MOL requirements
  • Available for occasional evening and weekend work and for call in on off shift hours in emergency situations
  • Ability to work in a poultry processing facility with exposure to dust, dander, feathers and live animals
  • Ability to travel approximately once a month to the Jarvis, ON location, and occasionally to the Spruce Grove, AB location and to the US
  • Must be legally entitled to work for Cargill in Canada on a non-temporary basis
 
Preferred:
  • Registered Safety Professional designation
  • 8 or more years of progressive related experience in the health and safety field
  • WSIB Part 2 Certification
