EMPLOYMENT
LITERACY AND
RESOURCE COORDINATOR
LUSO Community Services is a provider of community social services with
a holistic approach to community development.
We provide programs and services in the
Position Description:
This is a
full time position (40 hours per week). The Literacy & Resource Coordinator
reports to the Executive Director of the agency. The Successful candidate must
be able to start early August.
The
Literacy & Resource Coordinator is primarily responsible for coordinating all
of the literacy focused programs offered
by the agency including; Fast Track Tutoring, Shared Beginnings, Parents as Partners, School based homework/literacy
programs, RAPP program etc., The Literacy Coordinator is also responsible
for the coordination of volunteers for
these programs as well as the recruitment and orientation of volunteers for
other agency programs.
Fast Track: an after school tutoring program that operates
in conjunction with the school year. The
program helps children in grades 1-8 improve literacy and numeracy skills. In addition, the program focuses on
developing time management skills and improving studying techniques.
Shared Beginnings: focuses on literacy skills of
single, immigrant and newcomer parents and enhances daily language and literacy
interaction with children. It is a
preventative project aimed at children ages 0-6 who are at risk of developing
future literacy problems.
Parents as Partners: a series of workshops that will help parents to
support their children in school. Workshops include:
Families and Schools, Understanding the Provincial Report card, Positive
Discipline to name a few.
School
based homework/literacy support program: Provide homework/literacy
skills support to children in
Kindergarten to Grade
6 at local elementary schools. Program provides academic and skill
building support
to students.
Responsibilities:
Program Management:
-Develop,
implement, promote and supervise literacy based programs
- Develop
resources, evaluations, workshops and activities related to program needs
-Work
closely with various partners- library, TVDSB etc. to develop and maintain
strong
working relationships
and partnerships
-Manage
day to day operational aspects of the various programs including providing
front
line support if necessary
-Prepare
reports, maintain files, statistics,
evaluate programs and outcomes
-Develop, implement and facilitate various training components for literacy based staff
-
Act
as a resource to various committees and participate in community group meetings
-Proposal
and grant development
-Supervision
of part-time literacy staff and student placements involved with literacy based programs
Volunteer Management:
-Oversee
the recruitment, screening and training of volunteers in accordance with agency’s
policies and procedures.
-
Manage
the volunteer development program including orientation, ongoing education
presentations,
supervision, support and evaluation
Key Qualifications:
·
Post
secondary degree/diploma in a human care field of study
·
3-5
years experience working with parents and school- age children
·
Must
be well versed and knowledgeable in community issues and needs related to child
and
family literacy
·
Experience in supervision, volunteer
management in a non-profit setting.
·
Excellent
program development and planning skills
·
Must be self-directed, able to working
independently as well as within a multi disciplinary
team
environment
·
Excellent
communication skills (written, oral and interpersonal)
·
Strong
facilitation and presentation skills
·
Knowledge
of community agencies and resources
·
Excellent
time management, highly organized and systematic
·
Experience
working with people from diverse cultures and backgrounds are assets
·
Experience
with outreach activities and strategies to reach diverse groups
·
Experience with report writing, grant
applications, maintaining statistics etc.,
·
Well
defined computer skills such as Microsoft Office, Word Perfect, Internet
·
Possess
valid CPR & First Aid certification (or be willing to obtain at own cost)
·
Must pass a background police screening
process
·
Valid driver’s license and access to a
reliable vehicle
